The Barbados National Commission for UNESCO was established following a Cabinet decision in 1970-10-01.
The functions of the Commission are:
(a) to advise the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development on matters relating to UNESCO;
(b) to cooperate in the implementation for the programme and projects of UNESCO in Barbados;
(c) to create and develop among the people of Barbados an interest in the objectives, programmes and activities of UNESCO via the dissemination of information and via appropriate measures;
(d) to consider any matters on Education, Science, Culture and Communication referred to it; and,
(e) to maintain liaison with other National Commissions, with national cooperating bodies and with UNESCO.
The Barbados Memory of the World Committee was established in 2000 under the auspices of the Barbados National Commission for UNESCO. It has been chaired since February 2000 by Miss Elizabeth Watson, Campus Librarian, Cave Hill, The University of the West Indies.
